Technique for making Sekishu washi is designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and by Japan as an Intangible Cultural Property. One of the oldest continuously made papers in Japan, made in the Sekishu area, now called Shimane prefecture.
Although this washi is traditionally used for brush writing, it is also excellent for conservation uses, all forms of printmaking, and dyeing. Sekishu Mare meets the standards for Heritage Washi (HW),
