About the event

On Father’s Day weekend, you’ll find Megan Snook––ferrotype artist and owner of The People’s Portraiture––staging portraits and developing tintypes right here in-shop! Capture a moment shared by the whole family (up to 5 people), celebrate the love and friendship you share with someone special, or showcase the beauty of being your authentic self!

Sessions booked for couples or individual portraits may also include a few props provided by the guest: a lucky fishing rod, a musical instrument, a treasured heirloom, or tools of their trade or hobbies! (Weapons of any nature are prohibited, regardless of decommissioning or deactivation status.)

After your staged portrait, you’ll have a front-row seat to the development of your image and the wet-collodion process!

What is a tin type?

The tintype is a 19th century form of photography which utilizes the wet plate collodion process. The process requires a tin plate to be coated with collodion and then soaked in a silver nitrate bath. After the silver has bonded to the collodion, the plate has become sensitive to the light, similar to a piece of film. The plate is then transferred to a plate carrier to protect it from the light until it is placed in the camera for its exposure. Once the plate is exposed, it is then returned to a dark space for development. After being washed and dried, the plate is then varnished. When the varnish has cured, the finalized plate (measuring about 4.5” x 5.5”) is then ready to be returned to the patron.

  • Once you’ve booked your session, you’ll receive an email with instructions about arrival, recommended dress, and an option to download a printable certificate if you are booking the session as a gift!
  • Following a booked session, guests will receive 10% off any purchases made while on-site.
  • All fully-cured plates will be available for pickup on Monday 6/17, at which time you will also receive a digital scan of your image.
